SCIATICA PAIN TREATMENT
SCIATICA PAIN TREATMENT
The sciatic nerve is formed by the union of some of the nerve branches originating from the lumbar region.
Sciatic nerve pain occurs as a result of compression of the sciatic nerve or compression of the branches that form the nerve. The sciatic nerve is a large nerve that originates from the spine and extends down both sides to the legs. Pressure on this nerve for any reason can cause a sharp, burning pain that usually starts in the lower back and radiates through the hips, thighs, knees and ankles.
Some common conditions that can cause sciatica pain include:
- Lumbar Disc Herniation: As a result of the weakening or rupture of the outer layer of the discs between the vertebrae, the soft tissue inside comes out and puts pressure on the nerve branches that form the sciatic nerve.
- Spinal Stenosis: Narrowing of the spinal canal can put pressure on the spinal cord or nerve roots, causing sciatica pain.
- Piriformis Syndrome: The hip muscle called Piriformis puts pressure on the sciatic nerve.
- Deformities of the Spine: Pressure on the sciatic nerve due to spinal curvature or another structural disorder.
- Muscle Spasms or Injuries: Spasms or injuries of the muscles in the hip area.
Symptoms of sciatica pain may include:
- Pain in the lower back or hip area.
- Pain, burning or tingling in the legs.
- Weakness or loss of sensation in the ankle or foot.
- Pain increases with activities such as sitting, standing or coughing.
Treatment of sciatica pain varies depending on its root cause. Treatment options may include medications, physical therapy, exercise programs, injections and surgery. The treatment plan is usually determined based on the patient's condition, symptoms, and medical history. If you are experiencing sciatica pain, it is important to see a healthcare professional and receive an accurate diagnosis and treatment plan.
